Trips with Cats: The Do’s, the Don’ts, and the Demon Zoomies

Many people who call the Fireside Project Psychedelic Support Line share stories about the surprising companions that appear during psychedelic experiences. Sometimes it’s a friend holding space. Sometimes it’s a stranger at a festival. And very often, it’s a pet.

Cats in particular seem to play memorable roles in psychedelic journeys.

Their curiosity, quiet presence, and mysterious personalities can feel amplified when perception shifts. To someone in an altered state, a cat’s slow blink or rhythmic purring can feel deeply comforting and occasionally a little uncanny.

At Fireside Project, we often hear stories about animals showing up in meaningful ways during psychedelic experiences. Some are sweet, some are funny, and some are briefly terrifying before reality settles back in.

As always, our approach is simple: acknowledge the beauty of these moments while minimizing risk for ourselves and our furry companions

And if an experience ever becomes confusing or overwhelming, whether animals are involved or not, you can always call or text 62-FIRESIDE (623-473-7433) for free, confidential peer support.

Cats, Mysticism, and Cultural History

Human fascination with cats runs deep.

Eckhart Tolle once wrote, “I have lived with several Zen masters—all of them cats.” The comment resonates with many people who have spent time observing a cat’s ability to sit quietly, completely present in the moment.

Across cultures, cats have long been associated with mystery and spiritual symbolism. In ancient Egypt they were revered and protected under law, linked to the goddess Bastet. Norse traditions associate cats with the goddess Freyja. connecting cats to protection and fertility, while Chinese folklore sometimes portrayed them as guardians against negative forces.

During psychedelic experiences—when symbolism and perception often intensify—it’s not surprising that animals can appear imbued with meaning.

Sometimes that meaning is beautiful. Sometimes it’s humorous. Occasionally, it’s a little alarming.

When Cats Become Part Of The Experience

One caller shared a story that began with uncertainty and ended with an unexpected connection.

They had been dating someone for a few months. Their partner had a cat who seemed friendly enough, but never allowed them to get close. Attempts to pet her were met with hissing or quick escapes across the room.

Then one night, the couple shared a psilocybin experience together and spent hours in a deep, emotional conversation. At one point, while lying on the couch, something surprising happened.

The cat jumped onto their back and began purring—rolling around and settling in comfortably as if she had always belonged there.

From that night on, everything changed. The once-distant cat became affectionate, vocal, and inseparable whenever they visited.

Moments like these often feel mystical when they happen during psychedelic experiences. But sometimes the explanation may be simple: relaxed body language, slower movements, and a calmer emotional atmosphere can make animals feel safe.

Whatever the reason, experiences like these remind us that animals are sensitive to energy, tone, and presence in ways that can feel amplified during altered states.

When Your Cat Becomes a “Demon”

A psychedelic experience that Fireside volunteer John shared perfectly illustrates how dramatically perception can shift during an altered state.

He recalled, “I was tripping with mushrooms alone at home with all the lights off. At about 1 am I was past peak but still much beshroomed.”

Standing at the top of the stairs after leaving the bathroom, he suddenly heard a loud screech. He exclaimed, “It turned my belly to ice with fear!” Then he heard the sound of something loud and heavy rushing up the stairs.

What appeared next felt straight out of a nightmare. “It came out of the darkness: a demon rising from the pits hell to eat my soul. It had about 8 legs and glowing red eyes, and it was coming straight for me unbelievably fast.”

He braced for impact.

Then the creature approached. “After the demon ran past me underneath my feet, I realized it was just my cat with the zoomies. Thankfully, my soul was intact.”

Moments like this highlight how psychedelics can dramatically amplify interpretation. Shapes distort, sounds become larger than life, and the brain fills in stories before it has time to fully process what’s actually happening.

Thankfully, most of the time the explanation is far less supernatural.

The Quiet Role of Animal Companions

While some feline encounters are startling, others can be deeply grounding.

Retreat facilitator and Fireside Community Engagement Manager Merryn Spence shared a story about a cat who seemed to intuitively appear during ceremonies at a retreat center she once operated in Ecuador.

At first, the cat simply wandered onto the property and began appearing regularly. “After a while we began feeding her, and she started to come inside and sleep inside. We didn't call her anything for awhile other than ‘gatita’ [little cat], waiting for a name to appear.”

Over time, something remarkable happened. “Many ceremonies were facilitated at this center, including ayahuasca, huachuma, and psilocybin, and she never ever missed a ceremony!”

According to Merryn, the cat developed a very predictable rhythm during gatherings. “She would consistently be there for a welcoming circle and prayer, disappear for a few hours, then return at the peak of the journey.”

When she reappeared, “She'd make her rounds with all the participants and staff saying hello and getting pets, and then would eventually settle down with someone who usually pretty visibly needed an anchor.”

Her calm presence had a noticeable effect. “Her purring and presence was the co-regulation we all needed while traversing the cosmos.”

The cat became such a beloved part of the community that Merryn briefly considered bringing her along when the retreat center eventually closed.

But just before they moved, the mysterious visitor vanished.

Harm Reduction When Psychedelics and Pets Mix

Stories like these can be charming and meaningful, but it’s important to remember that animals are not aware of what humans are experiencing during psychedelic states.

From a harm reduction perspective, it helps to think about the experience from your pet’s perspective as well.

Animals may react unpredictably to unfamiliar movements, sudden emotional expression, or changes in tone of voice. A cat that normally enjoys affection may feel overwhelmed if sensory perception is heightened and touch becomes more intense than expected.

If you plan to have a psychedelic experience at home, it can help to create a calm and safe environment for both you and your pets. Some people prefer to keep animals nearby for comfort, while others find it easier to place pets in another room during the peak of an experience. If this is your preference as well, please ensure your pets have food, water, and are comfortable as you’re settling in for a long journey.

There’s no single rule that works for everyone. The key is moving slowly, respecting your pet’s boundaries, and remembering that animals are simply behaving like animals, even if they briefly appear to be cosmic messengers.

And if your cat suddenly turns into what looks like a mythological creature sprinting through the hallway, there’s a very good chance it’s just zoomies.
